Gettin' broody!

One of our hens starting sitting on some eggs a couple of weeks ago, and the new little chicks have hatched in the past couple of days.  Out of 7 eggs, 4 babies survived.  They are so cute and soft looking!  It's kind of funny to watch the hen get all puffed up and protective whenever the rooster or any of the other chickens start coming close.

Newest additions.

It's spring, and time to bring in some new baby chicks!  Last April we started out with 10 chickens, and now one year later we are left with just 5 - 1 beautiful rooster, and 4 hens.  The other 5 met their demise in some form or other, getting hit by cars, killed by neighborhood dogs, and one we think was killed by a coyote or some other wild animal.  We also chose to butcher the one other rooster we had, because it was aggressive and it was attacking the other chickens and the kids!

This year we're raising 5 new pullets (females), Americanas, which will eventually lay "easter eggs", or colored eggs.  The kids are spending all of their time down in the sunroom where we have the baby chicks in a homemade brooder.

Winner, winner chicken dinner! (A tribute to 'Food, Inc.')

Here we have last night's dinner: corn on the cob from our garden, breadsticks made with home ground wheat and pumpkin from our garden, and chicken, courtesy of our very own, home grown rooster!  :)

First Egg!

We came home from a few days away for a family reunion and found the first attempt at an egg! The shell was too soft to survive the stomping chickens, but we're hopeful this means more eggs are on their way!

Big chicks!

Good morning!

One of the roosters is starting to crow.  As you can hear in this video clip, he's still learning!
